I moved into a house with an apple tree in northern Minnesota. It’s chock full of small to medium sized apples now. Most of them are almost entirely green, although some have some red color. I have no idea what type of apple they are (they look like plain old apples to me!).
How will I know when to pick them? Is there a certain time of year? Do I go by the color? Do I go by the size? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

The most important thing is taste. Try eating one. If it tastes good they’re probably ready, although it is a little early. I would pick them gradually over the next few weeks and see if the taste improves. Also if they’re hard to bite they probably need more time even if they are sweet enough.

September is Apple season. Some varieties go into October.
